From the Ground

One of the first things I wanted to do for the game was to draw a ground tile upon which it would then be possible to build everything else.

My first concept was very simple. I used only a 2D plane that I painted over and then drew a couple of what would be an attempt at grass on top.

This honestly looked really bad and I decided to try drawing inspiration from other games. The first one, which is a huge influence overall, is Wakfu. The second one I took as a reference for the tiles is Hartacon.

I completely redid the tile. I included the ground below so that it would be possible to move the tile in the Z axis as well. I also chose a different approach when drawing the grass, and was now drawing individual strands instead making sure it overlaps the edges. In order for the player to be able to easily distinguish between individual tiles I made a black outline around the top of the tile. Finally, I made three color variants of the grass to give the environment a more natural feeling.

Progressing with FGP

I made a set of sketches for each frame of the running animation of the character and made a gif for presentation’s sake.

I also tried making more card designes, but neither of the two I made are what I’m looking for. I need to find a way to get around the overly prominent symetry.

Character Design

The idea of the video game was already a year old in fact, and as such there was some already some work done. We decided to go with a female lead and I made a rough sketch of what she might look like. I then refined the sketch. From there I decided to try a more sci-fi approach to the design and made an alternative costume. I also played with different hairstyles, but I found it surprisingly difficult to design, since there are so many possibilities. Because of that, I couldn’t decide and consider the hair to be just a placeholder ready to be replaced at any time. I had a similar problem with eyes, which are in the same situation.

In the end there was a need to make a decision to move the work forward, and so at least for now I made a combination of the designes with bits of new stuff and simplified it overall. I then used it as a base for actual game sprites.

Leaving the LPC work aside, the two other concepts I worked on for the FGP are as stated before an educational video game, and newly a set of poker cards designed with a Warhammer 40K theme in mind.

The concept of the game revolves around the idea of teaching player how to read kanji (Chinese characters used in Japan). The intention is to use already established gameplay mechanics of a turn based strategy game with role playing elements in combination with a system of command promts, which require the player to use their knowledge of kanji.

Since the game is a project that requires fairly advanced programming skills, I plan on working on it in collaboration with a friend of mine, Tomáš Havlík, a student of CTU in Prague. Our work is clearly separated into coding on his part, creating all the visuals on my part, and is a combined effort in case of decision making in terms of mechanics, gameplay, narrative and such. The images above are his work that he made when we first discussed what kind of game we want to make.

Having a friend who’s a big fan of the Warhammer 40K universe and being one myself, I was inspired to desing a set of poker cards themed after four major factions of the W40K universe, and possibly present them to my fried as a gift once they are printed out.

The four major factions mentioned are all unique, which is very convinient as there are spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs each one could represent with clear distinction.

Left to right: Eldar, Chaos, Orks, Space Marines (not my work)

The idea was to use hearts for Eldar and spades for Space Marines with diamonds and clubs still undecided between Chaos and Orks.

Getting to Know Oneself

March 9, 2017

Before anything else, in the Final Graphic Project class, we were tasked to fill out a form that would allow us to get a better understanding of ourselves as graphic designers, our workflow and skillsets, as well as help us decide on the direction for the kind of project we want to do in order to best help us in pursuit of our future careers.

We were also asked to come up with tree project proposals. At this point, however, I only had two ideas. One was to continue and finalize the LPC project for the Graduation Exhibition from the last semester, and the other was a prototype of a educational video game.
